Heel Pain Treatment Options in Johannesburg
Heel Pain
A number of conditions affect one’s heel including:
- Posterior tibial tendinopathy
- Plantar Fasciopathy
- Baxter’s neuritis
- Arch strain
- Calcaneal fracture
- Fat pad contusion
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain treated by Yaseera Hajee’s Randburg, Johannesburg based Podiatry practice. Traditionally thought to be the result of inflammation, more recent research suggests that the cause is related to increased strain placed on the arch as a result of muscle strength, excessive loads placed on the plantar during exercise or changes in the range of joint movement.
Other causes of heel pain
Posterior Tibial Tendinopathy
This condition refers to the overuse or the excessive stretching of the Tibialis Posterior tendon which is the muscle in one’s lower leg positioned on the inner ankle attaching to the arch of one’s foot.
A number of treatment options exist including:
- A reduction of training or activity
- Exercises targeted at reversing the condition
- Shoe inserts or orthotics
- Footwear recommendations
- Shockwave therapy
Baxter’s Neuritis
This condition is the entrapment of the Baxters Nerve which runs from the inside of one’s heel under the arch of the foot to the outer heel.
Patients with Baxter’s neuritis present with painful symptoms resembling those of Plantar fasciitis with which this condition sometimes co-exists.
Treatment is centred around decompressing the Baxter’s nerve.
Arch Strain
Arch strain can be the result of high arched feet which can sometimes impair the movement of one’s foot during use resulting in pain. Treatment can include changing one’s shoes to a neutral or cushioned shoe.
Calcaneal Fracture
A calcaneal fracture is essentially a cracked heel bone, the largest bone forming the heel which is often the result of a high energy impact such as a fall or an accident.
Treatment typically requires reconstructive surgery, but long term implications can be expected.
Fat Pad Contusion
Fat Pad Contusion is essentially a bruised heel which is the caused by repetitive strain or impact on the heel resulting in heel pain.
Treatment options include:
- Assessing and modifying one’s gait or the way one walks, reducing strain on the heel
- Custom made orthotics including shoe inserts
- Massaging the affected and surrounding area and
- Balancing and strengthening exercises
