What causes Flat Feet?

A few causes of flat feet have been identified including:

  • Hypermobility which is too much flexibility in one’s joints which are the result of loose ligaments which go on to cause a number of foot conditions including flat foot, unstable ankles, plantar fasciitis or tendonitis. Hypermobility affects about 10% of the population.
  • Soft tissue conditions caused by genetic bony deposits which affect one’s manner of walking
  • Excessively long muscles
  • Irregular rotation of the leg or foot
  • Unusual pelvic alignment as a result of leg length discrepancy or a tilted pelvis which causes muscle imbalances, impairing one’s ability to walk normally thus causing pain.

Although the degree of pronation is variable from person to person, any abnormal force on our musculoskeletal system has a tendency to cause painful conditions.

Pronation causes the following conditions:

  • Foot ailments including bunions, corns, calluses and hammer toes
  • Heel ailments including spurs, heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • Shin ailments including shin splints
  • Knee ailments including runner’s knee, chondromalacia or patellofemoral syndrome
  • Thigh ailments such as Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Neck and head ailments resulting from poor postural alignment
  • Upper and lower back ailments such as disc protrusion and sciatica
