Symptoms and Treatment of Bromhidrosis or Smelly Feet in Johannesburg
Malodourous or stinky feet often belies an underlying medical cause and can affect anyone at any age, even if a person is not engaged in exercise or other activity requiring exertion. No longer should patients simply accept their fate as Yaseera Hajee, a podiatrist based in Randburg, Johannesburg is able to effectively treat the condition and advise on the underlying cause.
The most common cause of smelly feet is perspiration or sweat mixing with the excretions of bacteria or fungus that lives on one’s skin. Left untreated, smelly feet can lead to fungal toenails called onychomycosis, itch blisters and fungal rashes.
The average human foot contains around 250 000 sweat glands and can produce up to 400ml of sweat per day. When enclosed in socks, this natural sweating leads to a warm moist environment within one’s shoes and socks which is ideally suited to the incubation of fungus and bacteria.
The odour of bromhidrosis has often been compared to that of sweet mouldy cheese.
